Performance Coaching for High Potential Individuals

Performance Coaching
(For new managers or to improve performance in a given context)

This is the coaching that seeks most directly to take a person's skills to the next level in terms of quality and quantity of performance. It focuses on the individual's effectiveness in their current position.

Frequently it involves coaching for specific competencies, such as communication, conflict management or delegation.

Performance Coaching focuses externally on what the individual does, and relates first and foremost to incremental changes achieved through modifying and learning new ways of thinking, behaviours, skills, actions and results.

It is results oriented, generative in nature, and requires the client to practice being accountable for what occurs in their life. It distinguishes the client from the interpretations they have about life in general, themselves in particular and about the specific outcome they want.

Individuals are viewed as starting the coaching process whole and complete. The process of coaching empowers them to reveal or discover beliefs and assumptions that have been preventing or limiting a wider range of behaviours and actions, which would allow for desired result to occur. Performance Coaching asks people to push themselves beyond their comfort zone into unknown territory. It asks them to take actions, relative to their ability, that may at first seem impossible.

The coaching process encourages the client to distinguish their own truth from assumptions, interpretations and beliefs that they may consciously or subconsciously have taken on. It also assists the client to make their own clear, effective choices that will enable them to reach their desired outcomes. The client feels safe and supported while they experience living within a more empowered perspective.

Performance Coaching can be used in the following situations:

  • For people moving into supervisory or management positions for the first time, or taking on new roles and responsibilities
  • Improvement of performance within a given context (rather than the rectification of a performance issue)
  • Developing effective communication skills, including conflict management and negotiation
  • To fulfil a given task or activity more effectively (eg a project or presentation)
  • To keep top performers engaged, motivated and focused on their core strengths
  • For team leaders and supervisors looking to enhance their own personal performance, as well as that of their teams
  • Implementing sustainable, positive change in attitude and performance of individuals and teams

Metaco's Performance Coaching programme typically takes approximately 2½ - 3 months of one-on-one sessions with the coach, with initial profiling followed by coaching sessions at fortnightly intervals. The programme is designed to build independence from the coach, and at the conclusion of the programme the individual has developed the necessary skills as per the specific pre-determined agreed objectives for the programme to continue their development in line with these themselves.
